Federico de Cerchio is the ambassador and driving force of his family’s property in Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. Federico's family originally came to Abruzzo from Naples in 1910. Though wine growing was always part of life for the family, it wasn't until 1961 that they bottled their first wines for commercial sale.
Grapes are hand-harvested off low yielding vines, gently pressed and go through a period of extended maceration. The wine destined to become Riserva then goes into concrete tank for about 6 months before being aged further in large French and Slavonian tonneau. The wine spends another 6 months in bottle before being released. The resulting wine is dark, inky, and rich. The 2017 Black Label is replete with dark raspberry fruit, violet notes and fine, fleshy tannins. Apart from the fruit, there are notes of bark and espresso beans. The richness of the wine produces a full, round mouthfeel. Pour a glass into your biggest goblet and swirl it around. Linger over the aromas. This is a stylish, beautiful wine.
