Domaine des Comte Lafon needs little introduction. Their top wines fetch thousands of dollars. Dominique Lafon has been at the helm of the domaine since 1983. In 1999, he was among the first Côte d’Or producers to invest in the Mâcon, buying high altitude, old vine parcels. Applying biodynamic farming and aging his wine in large, neutral foudres, his aim was to produce the finest wines possible from this once overlooked region.
Regarding the 2020 vintage, Lafon commented that his wines “possess excellent freshness with unexpected good acidities.” He went on to say, “The wines are ripe, but not exotic.” In the Chardonnay game, that’s optimal.
The 2020 Lafon Saint-Véran shows ripe aromas of white melon and citrus blossoms. On the palate, it fans open with the citrus fruit met with the zesty acidity and a medium-bodied mouth feel. It hints at decadence just before the bone dry, lip smacking finish. This can be enjoyed now but will be at its best from 2023-2030.
