2009 was particularly kind to wine growers in Burgundy, producing healthy amounts of ripe and well-balanced fruit. Jean-Pierre Cornut took over the château from his father in 1995. A former aeronautical engineer, Cornut is known to be meticulous both in the vineyard and winery. The 18th century château is a noticeable landmark in Chassagne, with its tiled roof and hilltop perch. Maltroye’s holding encompass 15 hectares, mostly in Chassagne-Montrachet. The 6.5 acre Premier Cru Clos du Château de la Maltroye vineyard, once a vegetable garden, sits directly behind the house. It is a monople vineyard, meaning that it is owned entirely by Cornut. There is plenty of dark berry fruit in the aromas, along with notes of spice and herbs. The palate is layered and well balanced with expressive fruit and framed by medium weight tannins and structure. The finish is complex and long, with all components firing in harmony. It’s got structure; drink now-2030.
