Around 80 miles northeast of Beaune is the appellation of Irancy. It's roughly midway between Beaune and Paris. Irancy enjoys a reputation of producing tasty red Burgundies for a fraction of the prices demanded by their neighbors to the southeast. But like any remote vine growing site, there will be good wines and there will also be some not-so-good wines. Domaine Verret's Irancy certainly belongs in the former category.
The property has been in the same family for over 250 years! Bruno Verret oversees around 8 hectares of vines in Irancy and makes a few different wines from Pinot Noir. His Irancy Palotte is considered to be his finest bottling, sourcing the fruit from a single, sloped vineyard. Palotte is the southern-most vineyard in the appellation with perfect south/southwest exposure. Aromatically, it's fresh and berry-like. There are notes of earth and herbs in there as well, though the fruit is somewhat dominant. The palate entry is lively and buoyant, light to medium bodied. The tannins are slight on what is a well-rounded, harmonious finish. It's classic red Burgundy.
