Quality Saint-Estephe for under $35?
Yes, even in this day and age, there are serious bargains coming from Bordeaux, and this one is not to be overlooked!
With an ideally situated vineyard, adjacent to the Gironde and just north of Montrose, Meyney was a prime target for investment. In 2004, the property was purchased by CA Grands Crus, who own several other chateaux, namely Grand Puy Ducasse in Pauillac. The transition was barely noticeable in the wines until late 2013, when Hubert de Bouard, architect of the remarkable ascendance of Chateau Angelus, was hired to consult. Beginning with the 2014, the wines from Meyney have acheived another echelon of quality, as they now consistently receive the highest praise in the history of the estate.
95 points, Vinous
"The 2019 Meyney has a divine bouquet, so pure and winsome with floral red berry scents, beautifully integrated new oak and superb precision.
The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy to the point where you can almost overlook the backbone of this Saint-Estèphe. It could have been blowsy, yet it retains superb balance and feels luxuriant and long on the finish.
This is a stellar showing
easily eclipsing its performances either in barrel or just after bottling." - Neal Martin
