Vigneron Gilles Morat grew up in Vergisson, the highest-elevation village in the Macon. His father and grandfather owned vines in the area, selling their fruit to local negociants. After spending 15 years in electronics, Gilles wanted his children to experience the same way of life he enjoyed as he grew up. In 1997, he and his wife Joelle moved to Vergisson and founded their domaine. Adding to his father’s vines, they bolstered their vineyard holdings to a manageable 6 hectares and began producing their own wine.
Their vineyards sit on clay/limestone soils 1000-1500 feet above sea level and they’re certified organic. Morat enjoys a reputation of being one of the Macon’s superstar winemakers, known for producing wines of purity and liveliness. 2023 was a generous vintage in Pouilly-Fuisse, as yields were up and the quality is top-notch.
Morat’s 2023 Aux Vignes Dessus has complex aromas of green apples, lemon zest, and a hint of vanilla. The palate is vibrant and refreshing with the concentrated fruit met with a delightful hint of smoke on the finish. Drink 2026-2036.
