Style:
Baga is a dark-skinned grape native to Portugal noted for its natural acidity. 70% of this red is made from 70+ year old Baga vines grown in clay-limestone soils. The remainder of the blend is mostly Touriga Nacional that has been aged in neutral French oak barrels, while the Baga is stainless steel tank fermented.
Story:
Kompassus is the creation of João Póvoa, self-described as “an ophthalmologist by profession, but a farmer out of passion”. His estate was established in the appellation of Bairrada in 2005. In 2012, the highly-lauded winemaker Anselmo Mendes was hired on as a consultant. The 2020 Kompassus exhibits floral aromas with well-balanced, structured fruit. Medium-bodied, it has firm tannins and lively acidity on the finish.
Pairings:
Robust, hearty fare works best here like braised short ribs over creamy polenta, meatloaf with mashed potatoes or garlic-studded pork roast with crispy potatoes.
