About the grape variety: Tempranillo Blanco is a mutation of its namesake red. Let's call it a gift of nature. Similar to Grenache Blanc and Pinot Blanc, these mutations occur and can produce wines with new sensations that were previously unknown. The seminal moment of its resurgence was in 1988, when a farmer discovered the light-colored fruit hanging on a vine surrounded by his red Tempranillo. He reported it to Spain’s agricultural board and in five years’ time, it was being cloned and planted in the area. In 2007, the Rioja Ruling Council signed a decree allowing it to be part of the appellation’s permitted grape varieties. By European standards, that is amazingly fast - from discovery to appellation inclusion in less than 20 years. We know why, it’s that good!
